Materials
Sapphire vs mineral watch crystal
Short answer
Sapphire resists scratches better than mineral crystal, while mineral is generally cheaper to replace. Both can break. Check anti-reflective coating, fit and repair support before choosing.
Sapphire vs mineral crystal: the main difference
The crystal is the transparent cover over a watch dial. Sapphire is a good choice when avoiding surface scratches is your priority. Mineral crystal is hardened glass and is generally less expensive to replace. Neither material makes a watch unbreakable. Orient explains these trade-offs in its guide to watch crystals.
| What matters | Sapphire | Mineral |
|---|---|---|
| Surface scratches | More resistant | Less resistant than sapphire |
| Replacement cost | Generally higher | Generally lower |
| A hard impact | Can chip or shatter | Can also break |
| Best reason to choose it | Keeping the dial cover clear of scratches | Balancing purchase and repair cost |
Does sapphire crystal scratch or break?
Sapphire is scratch-resistant, not scratch-proof. Watch crystals use synthetic sapphire: Hamilton's watchmaking glossary identifies its hardness and resistance to scratching. That does not guarantee survival in a drop. If impact protection is your main concern, compare the whole watch rather than choosing by crystal material alone.
What does an anti-reflective coating do?
An anti-reflective, or AR, coating reduces reflections. It answers a different question from scratch resistance: can you read the dial comfortably in changing light? Orient describes the visibility benefit in its crystal explainer. On a skeleton watch, also check that the hands stand out against the openwork dial.
What to check before buying a sapphire crystal watch
- Read the specification: confirm the crystal material and whether an AR coating is included.
- Look beyond the glass: compare fit, movement, readability and after-sales support.
- Ask about repairs: find out who can source and fit a replacement crystal, especially for an unusual case shape.
The Hexagon Storm specifications list sapphire with an AR coating. Its hexagonal design and quartz movement are separate buying decisions; the crystal alone does not establish overall watch quality.
